EU Commits One Million Euros to Support Media on Elections
On 29 August, the EU Delegation signed a grant contract with Salam Afghanistan Media Organization (SAMO) for One Million Euros. The objective of the project is to increase public awareness through transparent reporting on election matters, and increase election credibility through critical and accurate reporting. To contribute to 2019 Presidential election verification, SAMO will carry out a public awareness raising campaign and a nationwide coverage of the election in close collaboration with ten Afghan media outlets through the establishment of a media center in Kabul which will be fed with information by dedicated reporters in each province. ''Afghan media have made tangible progress over the last 18 years. They are indispensable part of the Afghan democratic journey. This fund will assist them to contribute to the inclusivity, accountability, and coverage of the 28 September election, which stands at the intersection of constitutional order, continuity of the institutions and preservation of human rights in Afghanistan'', said the EU Ambassador to Afghanistan Pierre Mayaudon. The project will train 500 journalists to report before, during and after the ballot for the abovementioned media outlets. SAMO will also develop a database on election-related information including interviews, newspaper articles, photos, TV and radio broadcast material and more. The activities will cover the 28 September presidential election.
