On 14 January, the EU-Japan Dialogue on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation took place in Brussels. This dialogue served as an important platform for deepening consultations between Japan and the European Union on non-proliferation and disarmament, in light of the EU-Japan Security and Defense Partnership, concluded in November 2024.

At the dialogue, the EU and Japan exchanged views on a wide range of important current issues in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation, including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, arms control, regional issues, and biological and chemical weapons. They reaffirmed the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and concurred to continue consultations between the two sides in these areas. The dialogue underscored the EU and Japan’s shared commitment to promoting global peace and stability through collaborative efforts in arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation.

The EU was represented by Ambassador Stephan Klement, EU Special Envoy for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, while the Japanese side was represented by Dr. NAKAMURA Kimitake, Ambassador, Director-General of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
