EU-CELAC: Senior officials launch the consultative coordination mechanism and kick off preparations for next bi-regional Summit in 2025
Senior officials from the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) met in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for the first EU-CELAC Troika dialogue, following up on the commitment made at the EU-CELAC Summit held in Brussels in July 2023.
The EU and the three countries of the CELAC Troika (represented by Honduras, Colombia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) together with Guyana as current chair of CARICOM (Caribbean Community) reviewed the Bi-regional Roadmap 2023-2025 which will lead up to the next bi-regional Summit to be held in Colombia in 2025.
On this occasion they made good on the promise to launch the EU-CELAC consultative coordination mechanism to ensure continuity and follow-up between high-level meetings, prepare and organise EU-CELAC Meetings of Foreign Affairs Ministers.
The EU is committed to working closely with the past, current and future CELAC Presidencies (‘Troika’) to prepare for a successful bi-regional Summit in Colombia in 2025.
Background
The third EU-CELAC Summit took place in Brussels on 17/18 July 2023, eight years after the last one in this format in 2015. At the Summit, EU and CELAC leaders committed to renewing their long-standing partnership, which is founded on shared values and interests and strong economic, social and cultural ties. They adopted a Summit Declaration, decided to set up an EU-CELAC consultative coordination instance and agreed to hold summits every two years. At the Summit the EU-CELAC Roadmap for 2023 to 2025 was also presented, leading up to the next Summit, which will take place in Colombia in 2025.
The CELAC Troika is composed by the past, current and upcoming Pro Tempore Presidencies of CELAC and includes also a Member State of CARICOM represented by the country exercising its Presidency Pro Tempore. Currently Honduras is holding the Pro Tempore Presidency of the organisation and in 2025 it is planned to hand it over to Colombia.
