The role of local mediation in enhancing governance and stability: Case Studies from Deir Ezzor, As-Suwayda, and Afrin.

23.05.2024

Organisers: Baytna, pour le Soutien de la Société Civile and Justice For Life

The primary objective of this event is to spotlight three unique and practical experiences from three distinct regions within Syria. Each of these regions is under the governance of different powers, adding to the diversity and richness of the perspectives shared. The ultimate goal is to share the knowledge gained from these experiences and the tools developed to diminish the adverse impact of the challenges confronting these areas, fostering a more peaceful and stable environment.

The event will focus on presenting three case studies of mediation initiatives from different areas in Syria. These case studies are:

  • Deir Ezzor: During the crisis of 2023, nine active local organizations in North-East Syria collaborated to present a roadmap for dialogue. This roadmap was meticulously developed in consultation with various civil organizations and local powers, intending to facilitate a constructive conversation post-crisis.
  • As-Suwayda: The community responded to the declining role of official institutions by forming solidarity groups. These groups, comprised of various individuals and collectives from the province, aimed to re-provision basic services and support the community. Additionally, they established conflict resolution and mediation groups. Their objective was to halt the deteriorating security situation and aid the formation of a local vision for managing the area.
  • Afrin: After Turkey and the Syrian National Army took control, property violations arose between Syrian refugees from Ghouta and the original residents of Afrin. To mitigate these violations, local groups stepped in to mediate. This initiative received a widespread response, highlighting the importance of community-led efforts in conflict resolution.
