5. Oksana Kovalenko, Ukraine | #ShareYourLight - 2023
I could never imagine that in the 21st century when scientists are persistently looking for a balance between progress and the preservation of the planet, there is still space for unmotivated brutal aggression.
During the siege of Chernihiv, we spent days and nights in the shelter of our School Number 3. It literally became our home. There were about 70 children in the shelter and we did everything possible to make their days better. But they also helped us, cheered us up, behaved very organised, disciplined and adult. Together we learned to survive.
The Ukrainian Army liberated the Chernihiv region, yet many of my pupils’ parents are continuing to defend us against the enemy. A high price is being paid every day for the opportunity to study and I see that kids feel a healthy responsibility not to waste it. They know they are going to be the ones rebuilding Ukraine after the victory.
