Libyan Forensic Experts Hone Skills in Cutting-Edge Training at Rome's Tor Vergata University

Fifteen Libyan forensic experts, including six women, recently completed an intensive practical training course in Genetics, Toxicology, and Anthropology Investigations at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.  Held from February 3rd to 12th, the training equipped these professionals with advanced skills crucial for addressing Libya's complex forensic challenges.

The training, part of the EUBAM Libya project "Hands-on training on specific laboratory techniques and observe advanced forensic laboratory practices and equipment at the University of Tor Vergata – Rome," was made possible through a collaborative working arrangement between the University's Department of Biomedicine and Prevention and EUBAM Libya.  This initiative underscores the commitment to bolstering the forensic capabilities of the Libyan Ministry of Interior's Criminal Investigation Directorate, specifically the Forensic Laboratories in Tripoli, Benghazi, and Sabha.

This specialised training comes at a critical time for Libya.  The skills acquired are directly applicable to the ongoing victim identification efforts following the devastating floods in Derna, as well as the in-depth investigations into the recently discovered mass graves in Kufra.  The experts trained in Rome are already putting their newly acquired knowledge into practice in these crucial investigations.

This exchange of experience and expertise between Italy and Libya, facilitated by EUBAM Libya, represents a vital step towards future collaboration and reinforces our shared commitment to countering all forms of crime.

The training course is only the first iteration, with two additional planned to take place in April and May 2025.  These ongoing efforts demonstrate a sustained commitment to supporting Libya's forensic capacity.
