The European Union congratulates Yamandú Orsi on his election as President of Uruguay. The people of Uruguay voted in a peaceful and orderly manner, demonstrating once again the strength of Uruguay's institutions and its people’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law. 

Uruguay is a key partner for the European Union. Our longstanding ties are based on shared values and respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Our relationship is further strengthened by trade exchanges and numerous European companies’ investments in key sectors, thanks to the country's stable political and economic context.

We are committed to deepening our relationship in all areas of mutual interest, with a focus on the green, digital and fair transitions, to the benefit of our citizens. Recognising Uruguay's key role in regional integration, we also look forward to engaging constructively with the incoming government in support of multilateralism and a rules-based international order.
