Growing global challenges demand collective solutions. Effective multilateral governance and rules-based international cooperation are not mere options, but essential means to ensure that no one is left behind.

Multilateralism must be effective, fair and deliver results. The reform package, as outlined in Our Common Agenda, paves the way for the UN's modernization to meet the demands of the future. The EU supports a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council to better reflect today’s realities. Strengthening the voice of underrepresented regions, along with meaningful civil society and youth engagement, should be an integral part of the UN decision-making processes.

For the EU, working in partnership is an inherent part of our identity. Partnerships are crucial in navigating the most pressing challenges and multiple crises we face today. The EU remains committed to being a constructive, principled and reliable partner, fostering dialogue based on the UN Charter, international law and human rights. We will continue to listen to our partners’ concerns and remain attuned to the global imbalances affecting the most vulnerable countries.

In times of crisis, it is the less developed and vulnerable countries that often suffer the most. Accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will address global inequalities, creating a prosperous future, where people are safe and their rights are respected. The SDGs are embedded in the EU’s internal and external policies, for example in the European Green Deal and Global Gateway.

The EU also supports the UN Secretary-General's efforts to scale-up financing for development and improve transparency on the use of resources. Together with EU Member States, we have been leading the push for meaningful reform of the global financial architecture, with the focus on benefiting the most vulnerable while safeguarding global public goods.

The EU will be at the UN’s side every step of the way

Multilateralism with the United Nations at its core has always been a defining characteristic of the European Union. We will continue to work hand in hand with the UN to respond to global crises, threats and challenges that require cooperation and coordination based on universal principles and rules.
