Recognising Resilience: Women's Leadership in Northwest Syria's Earthquake Response and Beyond
Policy makers, donors and civil society are invited to participate in an open discussion on the pivotal role played by women in the response effort and explores their potential to shape equitable, inclusive and sustainable approaches to post-earthquake reconstruction and post-conflict recovery across Syria more broadly.
“Amidst the challenges and devastation caused by the disaster, women’s leadership, and women’s ability to rebuild and adapt, has opened space for women to forge a path towards recovery. We do not want to lose this chance.”
Fatema, Northwest Syria
During the earthquake response, women demonstrated remarkable leadership despite numerous barriers. They took on active and visible roles as first responders, medical aid providers, and advocates for marginalised communities. Their invaluable contributions, previously overlooked, garnered newfound respect and acceptance from the community.
To unlock the full potential of women's leadership, comprehensive approaches are needed. Recognising and supporting women's leadership can contribute to inclusive and sustainable peace building efforts and enhance resilience in the face of future shocks and crises.
The event will consist of a panel discussion where we will hear from senior officials and women leaders from NW Syria.
