Moldova: High Representative Borrell met with Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu
High Representative / Vice-President Josep Borrell met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu in Brussels today. They discussed the impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, in particular on Moldova’s energy security, and Moldova’s reform agenda as it seeks to advance on its European path.
High Representative Borrell reiterated the EU’s unwavering support to Moldova’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and condemned the violation of Moldova’s airspace by Russian missiles that were used for attacks on civilian targets and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
High Representative underlined the EU’s strong solidarity with Moldova and assured of the EU’s steadfast and comprehensive political, financial and technical support to support Moldova in mitigating the impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and shoring up its resilience. They discussed ways to further enhance cooperation on security and defence.
In the context of Moldova’s EU candidate status, High Representative welcomed the continued commitment of the Government to the reforms and highlighted the importance of delivering on justice sector reforms and on fighting corruption. This is key for the enlargement process, but equally important for strengthening Moldova’s overall resilience.
