People to People and Education
Investing in People: EU Support for Education and Skills Development in Central Asia
Through flagship programs like DARYA and Erasmus+, the EU invests in education, vocational training, and academic exchanges to develop skills and foster lasting connections between European and Central Asian youth.
The DARYA Project
DARYA, which stands for Dialogue and Action for Resourceful Youth in Central Asia, is a EUR 10 million programme implemented by the European Training Foundation (ETF) that will support inclusive skills development, relevant to labour market needs, for young women and men in the Central Asian countries. The two specific objectives of DARYA are:
- To foster the quality and inclusiveness of education, training and employment systems in Central Asia;
- To foster participatory and inclusive dialogue and cooperation mechanisms at national and regional level.
The International Dimension of Erasmus+
All five Central Asian countries benefit from Erasmus+ and are eager to increase their participation in the international dimension of this programme. Erasmus+ contributes significantly to fostering regional integration and cross-cultural understanding between the European Union and Central Asia.
By facilitating student and staff mobility, joint academic programmes and capacity building projects for higher education, Erasmus+ shares practice between the EU and Central Asia to build skills in key areas and nurtures lasting partnerships. Out of the EUR 2.2 billion dedicated to the Erasmus+ international dimension from 2021 to 2027, EUR 73 million is allocated to Central Asia.
Strengthening rule of law
The EU is also supporting the strengthening of the rule of law and the legal capacity of the Central Asian countries and contributes to the reform of their legal and judiciary systems. Regional cooperation aims at strengthening cross-border co-operation through integrated border management, BOMCA. The EU also supports drug demand reduction, prevention and health aspects of drug use through the Central Asia Drug Action Programme – CADAP.
