About Belarus Days
Belarus Days is a series of events devoted to democratic Belarus and the Belarusian people, organised and hosted by the European External Action Service and the European Commission in cooperation with the European Parliament, on 9 – 13 December 2024. For this occasion, the EU has invited over 100 representatives of Belarusian democratic forces, civil society, independent media, human rights organisations, cultural institutions, as well as the Belarusian diaspora, alongside international organisations, to participate in the events in Brussels.
The proposed events demonstrate the EU’s solidarity and continued commitment to the Belarusian people at the start of the new European legislature, and ahead of the so-called presidential election in Belarus on 26 January 2025. These events will showcase the positive impact of EU support.

EU support to the people of Belarus
European Union, 2024
After the fraudulent presidential elections in Belarus in August 2020 and the subsequent crackdown on peaceful protesters and the society by the Lukashenka regime, the European Union refused to recognise Lukashenka’s legitimacy as the head of state, condemned the repression, scaled down its relations with the authorities.
Since 24 February 2022, EU-Belarus relations have further deteriorated due to the complicity of the regime in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. EU policy towards Belarus is guided by the Council Conclusions of 12 October 2020 and 19 February 2024.
Following the review of the EU-Belarus relations post-2020, and in light of the complicit role of the Lukashenka regime in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine since 2022, the EU has recalibrated its assistance away from Belarusian public authorities and state-owned enterprises, and towards the people of Belarus. This support has been distributed across six key sectors: civil society, human rights, independent media, education, culture, and Small-and-Medium-Sized Businesses in exile. A total of around 140 million has been mobilised to support the people of Belarus since 2020.
The EU strongly supports the democratic forces in Belarus. We stand together against an oppressive regime and an accomplice in Russia's war.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, 17 February 2023
The people of Belarus must live in freedom. Free from autocracy. Free from oppression. The values that underpin your struggles bind us together as Europeans. We stand with the democratic forces of Belarus.
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, 13 September 2023.
The destiny of Belarus should be decided by its people and them alone.
Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, 22.09.2020, HRVP blog post.
Лёс Беларусі павінен вырашаць яе народ і толькі ён
Жазэп Барэль, Высокі прадстаўнік ЕС па замежных справах
