23.04.2020

Two chartered flights organized under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism repatriate EU citizens from Barbados and other countries

On 8 and 9 April, almost 450 Europeans who were stranded in Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago were able to return home on two Condor chartered flights to Frankfurt.

Organized under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the repatriation was possible thanks to the joint efforts led by Germany, via the German Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago, in coordination with the EU Delegations in Barbados and in T&T, and the diplomatic and consular representations of EU Member States in the region.

Among those repatriated, there were European citizens from 20 Member States, as well as Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Many of them were stranded across the region after some countries closed their airspace to passengers flights in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The flights were only possible due to the active support of the host governments who provided their assistance during the repatriation process.
