This isn't an official website of the European Union

The EU and the Order of Malta (official name: Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta) entertain diplomatic relations. In June 2007, the first Head of the EU Delegation in Rome was accredited to the Order of Malta. A representative of the Order is accredited to the EU.

The Order of Malta, a sovereign subject of international law, is one of the world’s oldest and largest humanitarian organisations (11th century), providing humanitarian, medical and social assistance impartially in 120 countries and facilitating mediation in international conflicts.

Political relations

The Order of Malta has been for many years a valuable partner of the European Union, having supported the implementation of EU programmes and projects world-wide, especially in the fields of emergency relief, medical care, the fight against poverty, the response to drought and famine, and special assistance to people affected by conflicts.

In 2009, the European Commission and the Order of Malta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming the cooperation, consultation and exchange of information in matters of common interest such as post-crisis situations, migration, local economic and social development, vulnerable groups, human rights, and intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

The EU Delegation in Rome entertains regular contacts with the Order of Malta; the Head of Delegation chairs the coordination with the Member States accredited to the Holy See.
