Promoting Forest Governance and Legal Timber Trade through the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement
Overall objectives |
Enable and enhance Vietnamese NGOs’ contribution for a just and sustainable development in Vietnam.
|
Specific objectives |
Expand the remit of the Vietnam NGO Forest Law Governance and Trade (VNGO-FLEGT) network’s role and ensure members (currently 60 CSOs) have the capacity and knowledge to monitor the implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) in relation to timber trade and forest governance.
|
Brief summary/description |
The EU and Vietnam have concluded an FTA and are in the process of implementing a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA). Trade liberalisation can exacerbate deforestation and forest degradation and negative impacts can be limited if an active and well informed civil society follows the process.
|
Expected results |
The VNGO FLEGT network is able to pro-actively take part in the EVFTA civil society monitoring mechanisms; Members of EVFTA DAGs and the timber industry in particular promote forest governance and measures to combat illegal timber trade; Trade committee and the Trade and Sustainable Development committee of the EVFTA to show commitment to implement the FTA in a way that protect forests and respect forest peoples’ rights.
