1511th Meeting of the Committee of Ministers (6 November 2024) EU statement on the Presidential elections and the Referendum in the Republic of Moldova
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
- The EU and its Member States warmly congratulate Maia Sandu on her re-election for a second term as President of the Republic of Moldova.
- We commend the authorities of the Republic of Moldova for the successful conduct of the elections, despite unprecedented interference by Russia, including with vote-buying schemes and disinformation. These hybrid attempts have sought to undermine the country’s democratic institutions.
- The recent referendum has reaffirmed the commitment of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to pursue the European integration path. The Republic of Moldova has now the opportunity to further build up on the unprecedented progress achieved in the last 4 years on the European and democratic reforms agenda.
- We welcome the declaration of President Sandu to be a President for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova, to work towards overcoming domestic political polarization and towards reforms, consolidating democratic governance and a dignified life for everybody.
- The EU and its Member States stand ready to intensify their joint work with the President and the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to promote democratic reforms and enhance the country's resilience, stability and prosperity.
