The European External Action Service (EEAS) is the EU's diplomatic service. It helps the EU's foreign affairs chief – the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy – carry out the Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy.
The European Union (EU) currently has 144 Delegations, eight of which are to international organizations. In all, 6200 staff are currently serving in these Union Delegations. The EU Delegations are placed under the authority of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who is also Vice President of the European Commission. The work of a Delegation varies from country to country but, in general, covers political matters, press and information, trade, aid management and the external aspects of internal EU policies.
The EU Delegation to Nicaragua is a diplomatic mission, similar to any other Embassy accredited in the country. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission representing the European Union interests.
We offer
Type of contract: Fixed-term – one year, subject to renewal based on budgetary availability and operational requirements.
A post of Local Agent Group III titled Secretary within Delegation’s Political, Press and Information Section under a fixed term contract. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation.
Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Secretary – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function, the successful candidate will serve as Assist the Head of Section and collaborate with other members of the section in the daily work of the Political, Press and Information Section.
Main place of work is in Managua, Nicaragua. The successful candidate will serve under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of Political, Press and Information and the ultimate authority of the Head of Delegation, within a team composed of 3 members, providing support, expertise and assistance in the following areas:
Secretarial Tasks:
- Telephone calls and messages.
- Typing, word processing and document preparation, receiving and filing documents
- Receiving visitors.
- Managing the agenda of the Head of Section and of the Head of Delegation (in the absence of the Personal Assistant to the HoD).
- Ensuring logistics (organization and proper functioning of meetings, vehicles, travel arrangements and reservations, secretarial team), preparation of missions.
- Attending all requested meetings.
- Preparation of outgoing mail for the signature of the Head of section and Head of Delegation, administration and monitoring of emails, faxes, photocopying of documents.
- Support in the organization and logistics of communication actions organized by the PPI section, including the management and updating of the contact database, etc.
Clerical Tasks:
• Daily 'press review' preparation.
• Monitoring and qualitative-quantitative management of information published in national and international media for press summary and reports.
• Text processing and translation.
• Reception, preparation, distribution, monitoring and filing of correspondence.
• Assist the Head of Section in the preparation of his missions.
• Support to the Head of Section in the logistics of visits and missions (namely related to political or electoral purposes; by the European Parliament or by other EU institutions).
• Assist the Communication Team in the Delegation's press relations logistics (press releases, interviews, press conferences, press articles, press trips).
• Assist the Communication Team in the logistics of all communication and public diplomacy activities of the Delegation.
• Make requests to the Headquarters for various publications. Likewise, guarantee its dissemination inside and outside the Delegation (mainly in Seminars, Fairs, and Educational Activities).
• Manage and keep updated the contact database (Government, Diplomatic Corps, Civil Society, and relevant Organizations/Institutions, including the private sector, partners for cultural diplomacy and counterparts (in close coordination with the secretariat of operational sections).
• Renewal of annual subscriptions (national and international newspapers).
• Community Manager, support to the Communication Team in the management and handling of the Delegation's social networks.
• Other relevant tasks under the guidance of the PPI Section Head and the Head of Delegation
Budget and finances:
• Monitoring of the operational and financial circuit process of public diplomacy, information and communication actions financed with the Press budget.
• Any other relevant task in accordance to the assignment.
Salary and benefits
The basic salary, starting from NIO 37,858.00 will depend on the verified employment experience. In addition, we offer a competitive benefits package, including health insurances and retirement savings plan, as well as leave days and public holidays.
The expected starting date is 1 February 2025.
Minimum requirements / eligibility criteria
- A copy of High School Diploma, studies on Management Secretarial or relevant experience on the post.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in performing the above mentioned tasks;
- Fluency English at level B1 minimum, both oral and writing;
- Residence and work permit in Nicaragua duly valid;
- Good standing as citizen/resident report;
- Medical fitness certification to carry out the tasks assigned.
- Reference Letter(s) of previous employer(s).
Assets / selection criteria
- Experience with the EU delegation or other donors in Nicaragua;
- Knowledge of EU applications, systems and procedures
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other software).
- Team player, pro-active and flexible.

The process
After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose. Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of Selection may include shortlisting of candidates based assessment of the information provided in the cover letter, CV; practical testing and interviews. N (at least 2, better 3) best candidates will be invited to the final interview.
