EU and Council of Europe Senior Officials meet to discuss strategic partnership
The agenda covered significant topics, including accountability for crimes in Ukraine, cooperation within the EU enlargement process, and support for democratic forces and civil society in Belarus. Discussions also extended to cooperation in other international organisations and multilateral fora, the strengthening of democracy, and addressing shared challenges such as artificial intelligence and environmental concerns. An informal working lunch facilitated further dialogue on political developments related to Türkiye and the South Caucasus.
Ahead of the Senior Official Meeting, the EU Delegation held a meeting with EU Heads of Mission, emphasising the importance of the EU's accession to the European Convention on Human Rights and expressing concerns over the Council of Europe’s visibility and democratic backsliding in Europe.
This year’s Senior Officials Meeting underscored the shared commitment to strengthening the EU-Council of Europe partnership and the importance of regular exchanges. It was a significant opportunity for both the EU and the Council of Europe to gain a better understanding of the mutual needs and expectations within the strategic partnership.
The next EU-Council of Europe Senior Officials Meeting will occur in Brussels during the first semester of 2025.
