The President of Tajikistan and the EU Ambassador Inaugurate New Water Supply System

The President of Tajikistan - H.E. Emomali Rahmon with participation of the Ambassador of the European Union to Tajikistan - H.E. Raimundas Karoblis officially inaugurated a potable water supply system in Lakhsh district. The project, funded by the European Union, with contribution from Caritas Switzerland, the government of Tajikistan and individual households marks a significant milestone in improving access to clean drinking water for nearly 13,000 residents in the city center and surrounding communities.

The construction of the water supply system, which began in April 2023, was overseen by Caritas Switzerland within the framework of the Integrated Rural Development project financed by the European Union in three districts of Rasht Valley. Spanning a total of 29 km, the system includes 18 km of pipeline from the water source to two reservoirs with a combined capacity of 500 m³, and an additional 11 km of distribution lines serving the district center.

With a total cost of €600,000, the system will supply potable water to around 4 thousand  residents of Vahdat town, as well as schools, medical facilities, and government offices through about 500 distribution points that are equipped with water meters and linked to a billing system. In addition, around 9 thousand individuals within 1700 households in surrounding villages will benefit from improved (stable) access to safe water.

For many households and public infrastructure, this is the first reliable access to clean (piped) drinking water since Tajikistan’s independence in 1991.
