Green Transition

Working with partners in the Indo-Pacific, the EU hopes to combat climate change.

The EU leads efforts in the adoption of renewable energy, climate resilience and environmental conservation. Working with partners, the EU hopes to combat, mitigate and adapt to climate change. Green policies are also necessary to counter pollution, the loss of biodiversity and other forms of environmental degradation.

The EU and Indo-Pacific partners have a decisive role to play in tackling climate change, becoming climate-neutral and accelerating the just transition to clean energy.

Green alliances

Through initiatives like the Green Alliances, such as those with Japan and Korea, the EU aim to strengthening bilateral cooperation and exchanging best practices. The Global Gateway (GG) Green Blue Alliance has facilitated tangible progress in Fiji with hydropower development and Papua New Guinea with the implementation of a Forest, Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme. While the Philippines benefits from the EU's GG green economy initiatives.

Just energy transition

Moreover, Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) facilitate a smooth shift away from fossil fuels to clean energy in South Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam (with discussions ongoing for a similar deal with India), prioritising social impact.

On the occasion of the first Africa Climate Summit organised in Nairobi, the EU and Kenya launched the Green Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap for Kenya, with the support of Global Gateway.

The EU is not going it alone, launching a €30 million Green Team Europe Initiative with ASEAN and green collaborations with Bangladesh, Vietnam, Tanzania and several other Indo-Pacific nations. Plus, the EU is supporting Africa's green transformation with the Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience in Africa TEI.

The EU directly funds green infrastructure projects such as hydropower, wind farms, and desalination plants in various Indo-Pacific countries, helping to develop resilience and foster a cleaner future.
