Nicaragua: Statement by the Spokesperson on the release of over hundred political prisoners

06.09.2024 EEAS Press Team

The Nicaraguan authorities have released 135 political prisoners, all Nicaraguan citizens, who were immediately transferred to Guatemala. The European Union expresses its satisfaction and relief over their release and commends the key efforts by the governments of the United States and Guatemala in ensuring their safe journey to Guatemala, facilitating their transit to the United States or other countries, and providing necessary emergency support.

The EU has consistently called for the release of all political prisoners in Nicaragua. The latest release is a positive step that should be followed by dialogue and further actions, including the liberation of the remaining political prisoners.

The EU reiterates the need to restore fundamental freedoms and respect the right to freedom of expression and dissent in the country. To this end, the EU remains open to dialogue with Nicaragua.
