2nd MEETING OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE REINFORCES EUBAM PARTNERSHIP WITH LIBYAN COUNTERPARTS

On 6 August, the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM) and its Libyan counterparts gathered for the second meeting of the Joint Committee (JC). JC was established by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year by EUBAM and the EU Affairs Department of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), as a steering body of the MoU.
Through this forum, EUBAM designs its activities in coordination with the Libyan authorities for the strengthening of their border management capabilities.
Following the first JC meeting in April, EUBAM is implementing the agreed projects, including at western border area with Tunisia. In addition, to monitor and follow-up the ongoing activities, the parties have established Sub-working Groups – on land and maritime borders and on organized crime.

During today’s meeting, both sides engaged in a constructive dialogue based on a comprehensive review of the Mission‘s undertakings up to now, agreeing on commonly defined priorities. In this perspective, the meeting allowed to define the Mission‘s activities for the second half of its mandate (up to June 2025) so that to meet the specific needs of the Libyan side. The partecipants also aknowledged the positive results of the interagency cooperation and interaction within the framework of the Sub-working Groups, stated the Head of EUBAM, Jan Vyčítal.
EUBAM recognized the crucial role played by MoFA – EU Affairs Department as the main coordination partner for EUBAM‘s activities, enabling the smooth communication with the Libyan counterparts.
EUBAM Libya is a civilian crisis mission part of the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union, with a mandate to contribute to the enhancement of the capacities of Libyan authorities and agencies dealing with the improvement of border management, cross-border crime and counter terrorism.
