EUMM’s long-term presence in Georgia serves as a testament to the EU’s steadfast commitment to peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

In August 2008, a war broke out between Russia and Georgia, when Russian troops invaded Georgia in support of the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. After 5 days of war, on 12 August 2008, the EU was able to negotiate a ceasefire agreement (the Six-Point Agreement).

To observe that all parties comply with the agreement, the Council of the EU established on 15 September 2008 an unarmed, civilian monitoring mission. Our first monitors arrived in Georgia already 2 weeks later, on 1 October 2008. Since that day, we’ve continuously had more than 200 monitors on the ground in Georgia. We come from all over the EU, but we all work towards one common goal: to contribute to stability in Georgia and the wider region.
