Guatemala: Statement by the Spokesperson on the electoral process in Guatemala

13.07.2023 EEAS Press Team

In line with the statement issued today by the Election Observation Mission of the European Union (EU EOM) in Guatemala, the EU welcomes the official announcement by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of the results of the general elections held on 25 June.

The EU expresses grave concern over the persistent attempts to undermine the integrity of these election results. The EU reiterates its call on all Guatemalan institutions to fully respect the integrity of the electoral process and the outcome of the first round of voting, which was closely followed by national and international observers.

To preserve the integrity of the electoral process it is paramount that the second round of presidential elections on 20 August can take place in strict compliance with the law, full respect for the constitutional order, and with guarantee that those competing can do so on equal terms.

The EU expresses its continued and full support for democracy in Guatemala, including through the continued presence of the EU EOM in the country.
