History and organization
The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Republic of Niger ensures the promotion and defense of the values and interests of the EU, as well as all activities relating to the monitoring of bilateral relations in the fields of political and economic relations. , commercial and cooperation. In particular, it ensures:
- Information on EU development and policies as well as the role and actions of the EU in Niger.
- Monitoring of the political, economic and social development of Niger as well as the monitoring of economic, political and cooperation relations with the WAEMU and ECOWAS countries.
- Management of community external aid to Niger.
- Support for the negotiations of economic partnership agreements between the EU, UEMOA and ECOWAS. In Niger, the management of aid constitutes the most important and certainly the most visible part of the tasks of the Delegation.
Alongside the “Administration” and “Politics / press / communication” sections, most of the Staff are assigned, under the authority of the Head of Operations, to operational sections (Infrastructure, Rural Development and Food Security, Economy, Trade and Good Governance, Finance, Contracts and Audits). A representative office of the humanitarian agency "ECHO" is also present in Niamey, as well as the civilian mission EUCAP Sahel Niger. The key stages of the Commission in Niger Relations between the European Commission and Niger date back to 1960, during the Treaty of Rome and the creation of the first European Development Fund (EDF). It was in 1990 that the "agreement on the establishment of the Delegation of the European Communities" formalized the status of the Delegation as a diplomatic representation.
In the 2000s, the various reforms of the European Commission led to major changes for the Delegation of Niger: an increase in its staff, modernization of its communication, staff training in community aid management, etc.
Since the Lisbon Treaty in December 2009 and the creation of the EU, the Delegation is now called "Delegation of the European Union".
