Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

I took up duty in the Lao PDR on 1 September 2024 and presented my credentials as Ambassador of the European Union to President Thongloun Sisoulith on 30 September 2024. The EU and Laos established diplomatic relations on 21^st November 1975. We have since developed friendly relations and cooperated in various fields in support of Laos’ socioeconomic development goals, and to promote peace and security, and ensure that human rights are enjoyed by all.

In addition to our activities in human development, governance and biodiversity conservation we seek to improve political relations, trade and cooperation with Laos for the mutual benefit of the people of Laos and the EU. The EU Delegation also takes forward our Global Gateway strategy, the EU's contribution to narrowing the global investment gap, encouraging public and private investment in infrastructure, green energy, education and research for sustainable development. Promoting the principles of green growth, gender equality and women's empowerment are also at the heart of our agenda.

The EU also works closely with Laos in the framework of the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership, especially in connectivity, trade and international relations. ASEAN is at the centre of the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The region's growing economic, demographic, and political weight makes it a key player in shaping the international order and in addressing global challenges.
