EU Ambassador Denis Chaibi presents letters of credence to Indonesian President Joko Widodo

H.E. Denis Chaibi presented his letters of credence to Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 23 October 2023 at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

Message from the Ambassador

Welcome to our website.

Indonesia and the European Union (EU) have been close partners for more than 35 years, which have seen the opening of the EU Diplomatic mission in Jakarta in 1988 and the signature of the bilateral Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) in 2014 – the first of its kind to have been concluded  with an ASEAN Member State.

Our relations are based on respect and cooperation on a wide scope of policies. I am personally committed to continue the work of my predecessors in promoting dialogue and mutual understanding, in a Team Europe spirit with the EU Member States, whose growing engagement in Indonesia is another strong indicator of the importance of our partnership. The establishment of the European Investment Bank's (EIB) first regional office covering Southeast Asia and Pacific in Jakarta underscores the EIB's role as a leading global financial institution, affirming its dedication to promoting EU projects that drive economic and social progress, benefiting not only Indonesia but also the wider ASEAN region, thereby reinforcing its substantial contribution to regional economic growth.

Building on Indonesia’s successful 2022 G20 Presidency and 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship, the EU sees Indonesia as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Our shared priorities include trade (through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement/ CEPA negotiations), environmental issues (through a green cooperation agenda and cooperation on the Sustainable Development Goals/ SDGs), as well as the challenges linked to the development of information and communication technologies, including the fight against disinformation, but also in the realms of cyber security, data protection, and the future of the internet.

Indonesia is a vibrant democracy, the 3rd largest in the world. We are committed, through political and sectoral structured dialogues, to engage in further cooperation projects and exchange experiences to enhance our common democratic values, and our goal towards a more tolerant and peaceful world, based on the international rule of law.

Indonesia and the EU also share the same creed: “United in Diversity”. We may be far from each other in distance, but we have many opportunities to explore how to be increasingly connected. Our aim in this regard is to promote a profound mutual understanding through cultural activities, based on a people-to-people approach. We want to continue to invest together in the future, including by working together with young people. The strengthening of our networks of students, especially through the Erasmus Mundus programme and other initiatives, is another priority, notably to address the challenges of climate change, the sustainable and just energy transition, and the green economy.

Multilaterally, we work together in the United Nations and other international fora. The EU has been supportive of Indonesia’s initiatives at both the international level, such as the Bali Democratic Forum, as well as at the regional level, through ASEAN.

Meanwhile, the EU shares a close working relationship with Brunei Darussalam. We partner in multilateral and regional fora, including ASEAN, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). We also cooperate on education, research, energy transition, trade and consular affairs. Our aim is to further expand our areas of mutual interest.

Looking forward to your feedback and comments through social networks.
