Message from the Ambassador

Welcome to the website of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao!

As the recently appointed Ambassador and Head of Office of the European Union (EU) to Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, I am both honoured and excited to embark on this journey at such a pivotal time in our relations. The EU has long enjoyed close, broad and deep relationships with both Special Administrative Regions. In this important role, I aim to strengthen these ties and explore new avenues for cooperation that will benefit both sides, whilst upholding universal values.

The EU recognises and appreciates the unique position both Hong Kong and Macao hold where East meets West, and we are committed to fostering relationships that honour this distinction.

The economic relations between the EU and both Hong Kong and Macao are robust and growing. The EU is one of Hong Kong’s largest trading and investment partners, and our trade relations have flourished over the years. Indeed European companies together represent the largest foreign business community here. They contribute significantly to Hong Kong’s economy, providing jobs and driving innovation. The EU is the second largest trading partner in goods of Macao. As Ambassador, I am committed to ensuring that these economic partnerships continue to expand, facilitating more opportunities for trade, investment, and collaboration in key sectors such as technology, green energy, and finance.

In today’s rapidly changing global landscape, it is imperative that we also focus on sustainable development. The EU has been at the forefront of promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change. I look forward to working with Hong Kong and Macao on initiatives that support the transition to a green economy. By sharing expertise, technology, and best practices, we can address the pressing environmental challenges of our time and create a sustainable future for generations to come. With a great passion for cycling, you can also expect me to be actively promoting this wonderful mode of transport!

Education and people-to-people exchanges are other critical areas where the EU, Hong Kong and Macao can further deepen their collaboration. The EU is home to some of the world’s leading academic institutions, and we welcome students from Hong Kong and Macao to pursue their studies in Europe. At the same time, European students and researchers benefit immensely from the unique perspectives and experiences they gain in Hong Kong and Macao. These exchanges foster mutual understanding and build bridges between our societies, enhancing the cultural richness and diversity that both Europe, Hong Kong and Macao cherish.

Human rights and the rule of law are cornerstones of the European Union’s values, and they are fundamental to our engagement with Hong Kong and Macao. We stand ready to support both Special Administrative Regions’ uniqueness, their high degree of autonomy and their commitment to these principles. It is through open dialogue and mutual respect that we can address any challenges that arise and work towards solutions that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals.

In conclusion, my tenure as Ambassador is dedicated to building on the strong foundation of friendship and cooperation that exists between the EU and Hong Kong and the EU and Macao. I am committed to fostering partnerships that are dynamic, forward-looking, and mutually beneficial. Together, we can navigate the complexities of our world, seize opportunities for growth, and promote a future where prosperity, sustainability, and human rights go hand in hand.

I extend my hand in friendship to the people of Hong Kong and Macao. Let us work together to create a brighter, more inclusive, and prosperous future for all.

I hope you will find this website useful for understanding our relationship with both Special Administrative Regions. I also invite you to follow our Office on Facebook, X, Instagram, and LinkedIn page for more interactive information. Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Thank you!
