RELATIONS WITH THE EU
The European Union and Sint Eustatius
Sint-Eustatius is a Dutch Overseas Territory in the northern part of the Leeward Islands, with a total area of 21 km² and a population of 3,800. Its capital is Oranjestad. Tourism is the mainstay of Sint-Eustatius' economy. Following October 2010, Sint Eustatius became a “special municipality” of the Netherlands (along with Bonaire and Saba).
EU Projects with Sint Eustatius
Cooperation 2014-20
Under the 11th EDF, Sint Eustatius is allocated €2.4 million. It is proposed to focus cooperation on energy, with the aim of reducing the vulnerability to external shocks and the dependence on fossil fuels.
Cooperation 2008-13
Under the 10th EDF, Sint Eustatius was allocated €2 million to assist with the upgrade and extension of the container standing area of the municipality’s port.
At the same time, Sint Eustatius is a beneficiary of the EDF-OCT Caribbean regional envelope of €40 million, which will focus on developing sustainable energy and marine biodiversity in the Caribbean. Sint Eustatius is also one of the beneficiaries of a €15 million programme under the 10th EDF regional envelope for the Caribbean OCTs which focuses on stimulating the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The programme is enhancing economic competitiveness and lessening social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities.
