EUTM and EUMAM Mozambique

23.10.2024 EUMAM Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique - Do you know what changed between European Union Training Mission and European Union Military Assistance Mission? We let you know all about the subject on the story.

It all started with a request from the Mozambican Government to support their armed forces through a training and capacity building mission. After this, and because European Union supported the efforts of Mozambique in promoting peace in Cabo Delgado and its neighbouring provinces, the Council decided to launch the EUTM Mozambique.

EUTM MOZ trained selected Mozambican units to compose 11 Quick Reaction Forces (QRFs), five units of Navy Marines, at the Katembe Training Camp, six units of Army Special Forces, at Chimoio Training Camp, and Tactical Air Control Parties, at Mavalane Training Camp, to help the local armed forces in their efforts to bring back safety and security to Cabo Delgado.

The mission gradually handed over the training to the Mozambican authorities via a Train-the-Trainers programme. It trained more than 100 instructors, enabling the Defence Armed Forces of Mozambique (FADM) to guarantee, in the future, the operational preparation of the QRFs.

Besides the training, the European Peace Facility (EPF) provided non-lethal equipment to the FADM, such as individual equipment (ballistic helmets, vests, camouflage nets, etc.), collective equipment (campaign tents, generators, water reserves, etc.), ground mobility assets (light vehicles, general transport vehicles, ambulances, inflatable boats, etc.), technical devices, field hospitals, etc.

After the successful role of EUTM MOZ, the mission was succeeded by an EU Military Assistance Mission, being a logical continuation of the long-lasting EU military partnership with Mozambique.

All EUMAM MOZ activities are conducted in close coordination with Mozambican authorities and in full compliance with their requests.

This mission will help the QRFs of the FADM to achieve a sustainable operational cycle. They will be mentored, advised and trained in order to be self-sufficient no later than June 2026.

The final aim of the EUMAM MOZ is to support the FADM in protecting the civilian population and restoring safety and security in the Cabo Delgado province.
