EUMAM-MOZ and FADM united on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

25.11.2024 EUMAM Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique - In allusion to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM-MOZ) promoted a campaign on social media that stood out for its commitment to the cause.

For one week, the mission's communication channels were the stage for inspiring messages left by the EUMAM-MOZ women, military and civilian, personnel. Each post highlighted phrases of encouragement, awareness and reflection, reinforcing the importance of fighting against all forms of violence.

The initiative culminated with a group photo, where EUMAM-MOZ women wore capulanas, a traditional Mozambican fabric that celebrates the identity and strength of Mozambican women, and an orange scarf, the colour that marks the date. This moment was also attended by two representatives of the Defence Armed Forces of Mozambique (FADM), who actively participated in the campaign.

Colonel Paulina, Head of the Gender Section of the FADM, warned that "violence against women and girls in the context of conflicts or peace is a crime punishable by law", adding that "The military are called to actively contribute to the end of sexual violence against women and girls”. To conclude, the Colonel called for "special measures for the protection of women and girls against gender-based sexual violence.”

Major Virgínia also left a message of awareness "we must denounce violence against women, put an end to the impunity perpetrated." The major concluded by saying that "It is up to all of us to put an end to any type of violence against women and girls".

This campaign not only highlighted EUMAM-MOZ and FADM's commitment to Women, Peace and Security Agenda, but also highlighted the essential role of women in building a fairer society.

Break the silence, end the violence!
