Head of Mission's Statement on the Launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
Today, on The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we stand united in our commitment to end all forms of violence against women and girls. The European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA) is proud to launch the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, a global initiative that seeks to raise awareness, promote advocacy, and inspire action to combat gender-based violence.
Gender-based violence is a pervasive violation of human rights that affects millions of individuals worldwide. It undermines the dignity, security, and autonomy of women and girls, and it impedes progress towards gender equality and sustainable development. With the accession of the EU to the Istanbul Convention on 1 October 2023, and the adoption of the EU Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence in May 2024, the EU underlined its commitment to end gender-based violence. As we embark on this 16-day journey, we reaffirm our dedication to creating a world where everyone can live free from fear and violence.
The European Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. These values are at the heart of our Mission and guide our efforts to build a more just and equitable society. Confidence building is essential in our work, as it fosters trust, cooperation, and mutual understanding among communities.
EUMA will systematically promote the equal and meaningful participation of women and men in all activities, and advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda (UNSCR 1325 and subsequent resolutions), which call for the full and equal participation and involvement of women in all efforts of maintaining and promoting peace and security, as well as protection from and prevention of all forms of violence against women.
During the upcoming 16 days, EUMA will engage with communities, partners, and stakeholders to amplify the voices of survivors, share vital information, and raise awareness about effective strategies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. We will conduct a series of social media activities throughout our Area of Operations aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the issue and support collective efforts to drive change. This year, aligned with the UN’s “UNiTE to END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN” theme, our slogan is "Break the Silence. End the Violence.’’ Starting today, we’ll ask staff at HQ and Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) to distribute stickers and display campaign posters, creating a visible commitment to ending gender-based violence. Additionally, we encourage our personnel to show solidarity by wearing orange shirts and wristbands throughout the campaign period.
I call upon all members of society to join us in this critical endeavor. Together, we can challenge harmful norms, support survivors, and build a society that values and protects the rights of every individual. Let us work hand in hand to ensure that gender-based violence becomes a relic of the past.
Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to this cause.
