INTRODUCTION

This workshop seeks to empower filmmakers and other film professionals to start thinking about – or even adopting – sustainable practices at every stage of the filmmaking process, from development to distribution. It will also provide practical tools for integrating eco-conscious strategies into film projects. 

The workshop is supported by Goethe-Institut Hanoi as venue partner.

STRUCTURE

Tentatively scheduled for two hours, the workshop will cover the following main topics:

- Understanding sustainability in filmmaking – introduction to key concepts: environmental responsibility, reducing carbon footprint, resource conservation, amongst others; why this matters for filmmakers.

- Current environmental impacts of film production: statistics and examples pertaining to traditional filmmaking models. 

- Key areas for filmmakers’ responsibility: energy consumption, waste management, materials and resources, water use, transportation.

- Case studies 

- Thinking green at every step of the project: development, pre-production, production, post-production, distribution. 

- Practical exercises.

REGISTRATION

The workshop is aimed at filmmakers, producers, curators/programmers, organisers, distributors, etc.  

To register, please complete this online form by 12:00 noon (GMT+7) on Thursday 14 November. Confirmation for those selected to participate in the workshop will be sent on 15 November. 

Please note that the workshop instructor will be connecting virtually from Europe; as such, online participation for non-Hanoi practitioners is also an option.

Language: English.

There is no entry fee for the workshop, however participants are responsible for any costs incurred from attending.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Marta García Larriu is the creator and director of the cultural association Another Way. Its biggest event is Madrid’s film festival on sustainability: Another Way Film Festival. With the support of her team, Another Way also offers national and international film series, as well as training on sustainable audiovisual production. She is also an international independent film producer.

Marta currently produces content for the production company La Costa. She is the former president of MATRIZ (the network of film festivals in Madrid). She is often invited as a guest speaker as an expert in culture and climate crisis awareness, and has been part of the Greenpeace jury at the San Sebastián Film Festival 2021. Marta has also authored the chapter on 'Sustainability in the Spanish audiovisual industry' for the Report on the State of Culture in Spain 2022 (Fundación Alternativas) amongst other papers.
