Internship Program Enhances Legal Expertise of Puntland Maritime Police Force's Legal Department in Bosaso

The internship program for the Puntland Maritime Police Force's (PMPF) Legal Department in Bosaso, launched in January 2024, offers a robust educational experience in maritime law and legal reform within Somalia's legal frameworks. Supported by EUCAP Somalia, the one-year program blends practical training with theoretical knowledge to prepare interns for professional roles in legal and related fields. The structured teaching approach, guided by the Mission's advisers, has significantly developed the interns' capabilities and deepened their understanding of their roles in legal reform and enforcement in Somalia.

The four dedicated interns have so far demonstrated exceptional commitment, discipline, and teamwork. Their collaborative efforts on projects and mutual support have enhanced the group's overall productivity. Their proactive approach is evident in their regular proposals for new ideas and improvements, showcasing innovation and forward-thinking. Mohamed, internal at the Legal Department of the PMPF, notes with enthusiasm:

"This internship program arrived at the perfect time in my career. It represents a valuable opportunity to contribute to my country's development. I would appreciate extending this opportunity, as one year does not seem sufficient to achieve all that I hope.”

EUCAP Somalia has equipped the interns with laptops and smartphones, enabling them to perform their tasks efficiently. On average, they spent 22 hours per month with EUCAP’s advisers, engaging in various training activities organised by the Mission.

The interns have shown remarkable progress in conducting detailed legal research, drafting and revising legal documents, and applying legal principles in real-world scenarios, particularly in maritime law enforcement. Their practical skills, crucial for effective law enforcement at sea, have significantly improved, allowing them to analyse complex situations with legal expertise and confidence. Abdalla, another intern, said:

"This internship opportunity at EUCAP Somalia has provided me with outstanding experiences and valuable knowledge to advance my career in legal and maritime fields. I look forward to gaining even more.”

The program also emphasizes ethics, fairness, and respect for human rights, principles that the interns have seamlessly integrated into their daily activities and decision-making processes.

In summary, the internship program has successfully achieved its initial goals, equipping interns with valuable knowledge and skills pertinent to the PMPF-Maritime Police Unit and their future careers in legal fields. The comprehensive training ensures they are well-prepared to advance in their professional paths, contributing significantly to legal reform and enforcement in Somalia.
