EUCAP Somalia hosts capacity building seminar on blue economy

Mogadishu, 28 September: EUCAP Somalia organized a capacity building seminar on the Blue Economy, bringing together representatives from six key Somali ministries. The seminar provided insights into the latest trends and challenges in the EU’s Blue Economy, emphasizing sustainability, climate adaptation, and the potential for blue growth in Somalia.

EUCAP Somalia organized a capacity-building seminar in Mogadishu focused on the Blue Economy in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy. The event brought together 19 representatives from six key ministries, including six women, from Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Environment and Climate Change; Ports and Marine Transportation, Information, Culture and Tourism; Energy and Water Resources; and Fisheries and Blue Economy.

The seminar aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in the EU’s Blue Economy sectors. It offered sector-specific socio-economic knowledge to help policymakers, Blue Economy operators, and stakeholders make informed decisions. As a cornerstone of the EU's Blue Economy initiatives, the seminar shed light on both the challenges and opportunities facing the various sectors, focusing on the key drivers necessary to unlock their potential, based on the most recent available data.

The discussions stressed the importance of a sustainable approach to marine resource management, adaptation to climate change, and the integration of marine ecosystem services. Central themes included the use of nature-based solutions and fostering sustainable blue growth.

Participants responded positively to the seminar, recognizing its importance and expressing the need for continued development and coordination in the Blue Economy sector, which holds significant potential for Somalia's growth and future development.
