10 December 2024, Mogadishu – EUCAP Somalia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, hosted a two-day workshop in Mogadishu to empower women in the fisheries sector by addressing systemic barriers and enhancing leadership opportunities across the fisheries value chain. The event concluded with a commitment to advancing gender equality and sustainability in Somalia’s maritime industries.

EUCAP Somalia, in partnership with Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, has concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop in Mogadishu aimed at empowering women in the fisheries sector. Held on 09 and 10 December, 2024, the event brought together key stakeholders to address the challenges faced by women in the fisheries sector and explore sustainable solutions for their empowerment.

The workshop focused on enhancing women’s visibility and leadership within the fisheries value chain, which spans from extractive activities to aquaculture, processing, and sales. Despite their significant contributions, women in the sector face systemic barriers, including limited access to resources, training, and decision-making roles.

Participants engaged in dynamic sessions on international legal frameworks, gender equality policies, environmental policy design, fisheries governance, and business management. The event concluded with a ceremony to recognize participants’ achievements and a collective declaration reaffirming the commitment to advancing gender equality and sustainability in the sector.

“This workshop is not an endpoint but a stepping stone toward empowering women as leaders and innovators in the fisheries sector. Together, we can ensure that women’s voices are heard, their contributions valued, and their potential fully realized.” - EUCAP Somalia Fisheries Expert Alberto Lopez-Asenjo

The event concluded with participants receiving certificates of achievement and a collective commitment to advancing gender equality and sustainability in Somalia’s maritime industries.

EUCAP Somalia remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote gender equality and sustainable development in Somalia’s maritime sectors.
