The European Union welcomes the elections held in Taiwan on 13 January, and congratulates all the voters who participated in this democratic exercise.  Our respective systems of governance are founded on a shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

The European Union underlines that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are key to regional and global security and prosperity. The EU remains concerned about growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral attempt to change the status quo.
