Sri Lanka: Statement by the Spokesperson on the Parliamentary elections
On 14 November, the people of Sri Lanka demonstrated again their commitment to democracy, voting in peaceful, transparent, competitive and well organised parliamentary elections. The European Union looks forward to continue working with the government and the people of Sri Lanka in support of a sustainable economic recovery, inclusive growth and reconciliation.
Following the invitation of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, the EU deployed an Election Expert Mission (EEM) to assess technical aspects of the parliamentary electoral process in Sri Lanka and make recommendations for future elections. The findings of the EEM will build upon the analysis and findings of the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) deployed between August and October this year for the Presidential elections at the invitation of the authorities of Sri Lanka.
The deployment of these missions is a testimony to our joint commitment to democracy and the values we share. We will continue our engagement with the government in support of the necessary reforms aimed to build a stable, prosperous and peaceful future, and to further expand our trade and investment relations.
