Pride in Brussels
The vibrant colours of the rainbow are more than just a symbol; they reflect our collective resilience against discrimination, violence, exclusion, hate speech, and disinformation. The Pride celebration in Brussels was a testament to our shared values of unity in diversity and our strength when we stand together.
We must be vigilant, as the growing visibility of our movements and legislative changes are often exploited by those who seek to undermine human rights and democratic freedoms. Some people view these events as mere parties with eccentric elements, believing they do not represent them or that they conflict with traditional values. It is crucial to remember that Pride events are not superficial celebrations. They are powerful political messages and significant human rights achievements that we must safeguard against those who seek to belittle and mock them.
Here in Brussels, we have the privilege to celebrate in safety, proudly waving our rainbow flags. However, we must not forget that in other parts of the world, and even in smaller towns and villages in Europe, this is not always possible. Descriptions of injustice, violence, and inequality are most readily understood through real-life case studies. We are not in a bubble; we raise our voices for those who look to us and our achievements.
The FRA’s third LGBTIQ+ survey (A long way to go for LGBTI equality) and the first report on Foreign information manipulation/interference (FIMI) targeting LGBTIQ+ people are crucial for understanding the current state of LGBTIQ+ rights and guiding our future actions. Gender equality, women, and LGBTIQ+ persons are targeted by FIMI, exploiting social polarization within the EU’s human rights framework. By framing LGBTIQ+ identities as non-traditional, they aim to portray the EU as morally corrupt. This issue threatens the social fabric, security, human rights, democracy, rule of law, and the EU’s global image.
There is still much work to be done to ensure diversity and human rights are upheld everywhere. Active participation in democracy starts with empathy for our colleagues, friends, and neighbours. Human rights are precious and must never be taken for granted.
In view of the European Parliament Elections, it is vital to remember that Democracy thrives only when we, as active citizens, exercise our voting rights to shape our own destinies. When we vote, we ensure our voices are heard and our rights are protected. It is through this empathy and active participation that we can create a just and inclusive society.
Stand with us, for human rights for all. We have all role to play. Together, we remain united and resolute as we look forward to EuroPride in Thessaloniki, continuing our journey stronger together.
