Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

24.04.2021

On 24 April, the European Union celebrates the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace. Today, the unprecedented ongoing global pandemic and the high level of our interdependence make all too evident the need for collective solutions.

The European Union reaffirms its commitment to preserving and strengthening the rules-based multilateralism, with the United Nations at its core. Engaging in a multilateral system based on the respect of international law, international cooperation and partnership remains the most efficient way to face growing worldwide challenges.

“Multilateralism is essentially a set of rules and methods that international actors (states, companies, civil society) agree to follow and implement on the basis of shared principles that are binding on all. Whether you are strong or weak, the rules are, at least in principle, binding on all. Multilateralism reflects a preference for norms over force. And it is in this that it speaks a great deal to Europe”

These were the words of the EU High Representative Josep Borrell in one of his recent blogs on the adoption of the EU Joint Communication on Multilateralism.

Multilateral co-operation benefits all countries. It is our collective responsibility to work towards a more peaceful, secure and prosperous world for present and future generations.

COVAX is multilateralism that delivers

It is not just an act of faith but a matter of principles and a matter of action. The European Union has been, since the very first moment, actively engaged in ensuring global and equitable access to vaccines, tests and treatments. The EU, institutions and member states together, are a major donor to COVAX facility with 2.47billion euros, covering 118 countries, including 72 vulnerable ones, and 4 billion people.
