Investing in Peace

The EU is actively involved in mediation activities around the world to support, preserve and restore peace at any stage of a conflict. The overall objective of peacebuilding mediation is to prevent disputes from developing into violent conflict and to avoid further escalation.

The EU engages in a range of mediation roles to support peace processes, leading mediation as a third party, opening up and facilitating spaces for mediation and dialogue, or supporting mediation efforts of others, offering capacity building, training, logistical support and expertise.

Its approach to conflicts and crises makes use of a comprehensive set of tools during all stages of a conflict. It involves many different actors, including the European Commission, EU Special Representatives, EU Delegations, Member States and the European External Action Service.

Through its Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace, the EU funds activities in the areas of crisis response, conflict prevention, peacebuilding and crisis preparedness, and response to global, trans-regional and emerging threats. The instrument’s activities are implemented in partner countries around the world, in conflict zones, in post-conflict environments and in emerging crisis settings. The EU has also established a pool of mediators to strengthen the EU’s mediation outreach and operational capacity.

Peacebuilding mediation is diplomacy in action. It is an investment in inclusive and lasting political solutions. It is an investment in peace.
