International Donors’ Conference: EU stands by Albania

Today (17 February) the European Union convened the international donors’ conference “Together for Albania”, to support reconstruction efforts after the earthquake that struck Albania at the end of November. The 6.3 magnitude earthquake caused the loss of 51 lives and injured many more.

 

The donors’ conference hosted by the EU brought together Member States, the Western Balkan partners and representatives from other countries as well as from international organisations and international financial institutions, including the UN and the World Bank. More than 900 participants and about 100 delegations from the EU and partners attended the conference and mobilised support for Albania. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama delivered the opening remarks while experts from Albania and international organisations presented the results of the post-disaster needs assessment.https://twitter.com/eu_eeas/status/1229374939704254464?s=20At the end of the donors’ conference a collective pledge of EUR 1.15 billion, including EUR 400 million in EU contributions was reached to help Albania with the reconstruction.High Representative Josep Borrell expressed his support to the Albanian people following the earthquake. “Today the EU hosted the international donors’ conference #TogetherforAlbania to help rebuild Albania after the devastating earthquake. HRVP Borrell underlined the continued work of the EU towards opening the door to the European perspective of all six Western Balkan partners.
