European Union and Chile: Strategic partners in the fight against climate change

03.09.2020

The European Union and Chile have been working closely together in the fight against climate change and in building a more sustainable future with the common objective to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

Within the framework of the Chilean Presidency of the COP 25, the EU together with Member States have sustained an active engagement and have expanded the range of activities as well as bilateral and regional cooperation.

For instance, through the Euroclima + programme, the EU has accompanied the work of the Chilean Government to submit a more ambitious proposal for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), facilitated the realization of various studies and experts discussions on priority topics and supported the Forum on green jobs and a just transition in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition, the initiative "Challenges for the climate in your region” financed by the EU foresees the holding of a series of dialogues, workshops and meetings in the 16 regions of Chile to generate dialogue about climate change, putting citizens at the centre, making the local perspective more visible as well as contributing to define policy actions for change. This initiative seeks to give continuity to the Citizen Festivals carried out in 2019 as preparatory activities for the COP25.

To accompany these climate action initiatives and enhance citizens’ knowledge about the impact of climate change, the EU Delegation to Chile has launched a series of 8 videos (of approximately 2 minutes each) in order to present in a simple way some key concepts to understand and address this phenomenon. With a strong call for action, the videos illustrate what each of us can do to take care about our planet. These videos were broadcasted for two weeks in EMOL TV, an important Chilean news website, and will also be screened on various educational platforms of the Chilean Ministry of Education, as well as on the TV Channel of the Chilean Congress.

Because each action counts, each action adds up and inspires: it is time to act.
