#EUBeachCleanup and ocean protection across the globe

The Delegation of the European Union to Sierra Leone, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Affairs, the National Tourist Board of Sierra Leone, the Freetown City Council, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Propel Organisation and Shout Climate Change Africa, organized the sixth (6 th) edition of the #EUBeachcleanup2023 event held along Lumley and Aberdeen beach in Freetown, on Saturday October 7, 2023.

Le 23 septembre 2023, sur la magnifique plage de Rafraf, entre la forêt verdoyante et la mer scintillante, une journée extraordinaire se levait malgré le vent qui soufflait. C'était le jour tant attendu de la 4ème édition du #EUBeachCleanup en Tunisie. Plus de 200 participants, jeunes et moins jeunes, s'étaient réunis sur cette plage unique, tous animés par la même mission noble : nettoyer la plage et sensibiliser à l'importance de préserver notre environnement. Parmi eux, des autorités locales et des ambassadeurs des États membres et des écoliers venus de trois écoles primaires publiques, unis dans leur engagement envers la protection du littoral tunisien.

Dans le cadre de la journée mondiale du nettoyage des plages et de la campagne #EUbeachCleanup, la Délégation de l'Union européenne en Mauritanie a organisé une session de nettoyage au Marché aux poissons à Nouakchott, ce 16 Septembre.

Samedi 16 septembre, ce sont plus de 400 habitants de la Commune de Hann Bel Air, des jeunes volontaires et activistes de l’environnement qui se sont joints à la Team Europe, venue en nombre pour marquer la Journée mondiale de nettoyage des côtes.

As part of the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, an annual European Union (EU) effort to fight marine litter co-organised with the United Nations, staff at the EU Delegation again took part in a beach cleanup event at Katase Kaigan beach south of Tokyo, on 16 September (World Coastal Cleanup Day) in partnership with local non-governmental organisation Umisakura. I n true ‘Team Europe’ spirit, they were enthusiastically joined by colleagues from the embassies of the EU Member States and other European countries in the endeavour.

As part of World Clean-up Day initiative, EUDEL collaborated with the representatives of the Liberia Climate Youth Association, African Youth Fellowship, and the People United Community residing on 20th Street, Sinkor, Monrovia, in an effort to clean the beach.

The 2023 edition of the World Cleanup Day was joined by the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova and EU Member States, including representatives of EU institutions and EU development partners based in the country.

Throughout the event, 720 pounds / 326.58 kg of solid waste were collected, more than 200 people participated, including community residents, EU officials in Ecuador.

Lors de la Journée mondiale et citoyenne de la propreté organisée le 16 septembre dans le cadre du week-end d’actions «  Agissons maintenant  » pour les Objectifs de développement durable (ODD), la ville de Bruxelles s’est une nouvelle fois mobilisée. Au bois de la Cambre, 15 membres du personnel des Nations Unies, dont trois représentants de l’UNESCO, se sont activés pour ramasser des déchets dans les sous-bois, avec les citoyens qui se sont portés volontaires, de manière spontanée. Les Schtroumpfs, qui sont les partenaires des Nations Unies et de l’Union européenne (UE) pour l’initiative «  EUBeachClean up – ici commence la mer  » , ont eu un franc succès auprès des enfants. Le personnage de la Schtroumpfette a contribué à la mobilisation et à la sensibilisation sur la propreté dans la ville.

On top of the hundreds of events organised worlwide today, together with Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius, we jumped in our kayaks with @canal_it_up and @eu4be! A perfect opportunity to show how we are constantly linked to our ocean, even miles away from it. Through waterways, our consumption and littering habits impact marine ecosystems. From policy, to citizens and businesses, we can all make a difference.

On World Clean-up Day, EU staff joined the #EUBeachCleanup team and their partners from the UN and the Smurfs, to help clean up the city in cooperation with the City of Brussels. Under the umbrella of the #EUBeachCleanup, Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius participated in a clean-up of the Brussels Canal, to raise awareness on the problem of plastic and waste in our seas and ocean.
