Dear visitors,

It is a real privilege to be appointed in Djibouti. Djibouti, a host land, both a land of peace and a safety, at the crossroads and how strategically important in the region. This is felt by the warm and open Djiboutians and Djiboutians. It is therefore of course that Djibouti hosts the headquarters of IGAD, another major player in regional development. I cannot stop seeing this earth as a flourishing and daily illustration of our European maxima: ‘United in diversity’.

We share so much values with Djibouti and I will work tirelessly to strengthen the already excellent quality of our partnership. It is in this sense that I will include my mandate in order to deepen our common goals of peace and stability for the region. Thus, the European Union and Djibouti work together in the field of maritime security, in particular through the Atalanta mission, for the benefit of the region and the world, and contribute together in multilateral fora to a rules-based international order and mutual respect of common commitments.

Now more than ever we are aware that the internal policies of the European Union and its external policies need to converge. I will only mention energy and climate change. I will therefore work to address these collective challenges with our partner Djibouti and the region through actions based on trust, trustworthiness, equality and mutual commitments. I will ensure that we can together make this shared vision of a prosperous Djibouti and a thriving region alive for the future for sustainable development for the benefit of all and in accordance with the fundamental values we share.

Djibouti is at a key moment in his history. And while peace is a sine qua non for the implementation of sustainable development for the benefit of all, the will is the way to achieve this. I will work with Djibouti and the region to address these challenges. Through its Global Gateway, the European Union can, in synergy with the State of Djibouti and those of the region, foster an environment conducive to the promotion of their sovereignty and open up the opportunities that will make Djibouti and the region of tomorrow, while respecting their uniqueness.
