Message from the Ambassador

It is a tremendous honor to have been appointed to Djibouti, a land of hospitality, peace, and refuge, at the strategic crossroads of the Horn of Africa. Djibouti is a nation firmly oriented towards the future, enriched by its cultural diversity, openness, and warmth, qualities that are embodied in every Djiboutian. It is only natural that Djibouti hosts the headquarters of IGAD, a key player in regional development, and serves as an essential partner for the European Union in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

The European Union and Djibouti share many common values, and it is on this strong foundation that we have built a robust and mutually beneficial partnership. My mandate here will focus on strengthening this bond, consolidating our shared objectives in the areas of peace, security, and sustainable development. Djibouti, as a critical hub for maritime security in the region, is an indispensable partner in the EU-led Atalanta mission, aimed at protecting vital maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Together, we not only ensure regional security but also contribute to international stability, while upholding a global order based on rules and shared commitments.

Beyond security, our partnership extends to other crucial areas. Access to water is a major challenge in this region, and the European Union is committed to supporting Djibouti in strengthening its water infrastructure to ensure sustainable access to this vital resource for its population. Together, we are implementing projects aimed at improving water management, a crucial element for the country's economic and social development.

Youth, the backbone of Djibouti, is also at the heart of our cooperation. The European Union is committed to creating more opportunities for young Djiboutians through initiatives in education, vocational training, and the digital sector. By supporting the development of digital skills, we are preparing Djibouti's youth to become the leaders of tomorrow, equipped to contribute to a modern, competitive, and inclusive economy.

Now more than ever, we are aware that the EU's internal and external policies must converge to address global challenges. Energy and climate change are two areas where Djibouti and the European Union can work hand in hand. Together, we will pursue concrete actions to tackle these challenges with mutual trust, respect, and commitment.

Djibouti stands at a pivotal moment in its history. While peace is an indispensable condition for sustainable development, determination and concerted action are the keys to achieving it. Through the European Union's Global Gateway initiative, we have the opportunity to strengthen our partnership by creating an environment that fosters Djibouti's sovereignty and the development of the region, while opening new horizons for future generations. Our cooperation in digital technology, security, water, youth, and other strategic sectors will shape a Djibouti and a region resolutely oriented towards a prosperous future, built on the values we share.

I invite you to explore this site to better understand the role of the European Union in the world and, in particular, in Djibouti. I wish you an excellent journey through our dynamic partnership.
