Mbare Art Space- Fusing Art & Technology to Benefit Artists
Mbare Art Space is a major urban renewal and adaptive re-use project where Harare City Council offered a long-term-lease to convert a popular and former beer-hall into a vibrant, non-profit visual arts space.
The Art Lab is a shared tech-focused resource for painters and mixed media artists housed within Mbare Art Space studios. A computer resource centre for online research, meetings, conversations and artistic portfolios creation has been set-up. The Art Lab project is a great initiative that supports emerging visual artists, allowing them to grow as individual artists while connecting them with audiences both at home and abroad.
The project has profiled 11 artists and video-chronicled Mbare residents with insights of the icon beer-hall where the project is now located. 5 videos by practicing artists were produced to inspire the practice of visual arts. An immersive and visually appealing website was successfully developed and offering online visibility for artists. The project forged other partnerships in the private sector and embassies to ensure sustainability. These include; Centragrid Solar, STO Foundation, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, the German Embassy, Uncommon Coding and a number of Mbare based trades men and women. A renewable energy (solar) system and hi-speed wifi was installed. Renovations of sections of the old beer-hall were completed and are offering safe spaces to innovate, co-create art and open pathways for interactions and intersections with wide audiences, locally and abroad.
