The State Committee of Veterinary and Livestock Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan held the International Forum on “Natural Resources and Livestock”, organised with the support of the French Development Agency and the European Union.

Participants discussed good practices in animal husbandry, energy efficiency, systems of animal identification and registration, and the investment climate in the livestock sector. The “Farmer’s Handbook on Standards of Good Practices in Animal Production in the Republic of Uzbekistan” was also presented at the Forum.

Mr Wim Riepma, the Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation -  in Uzbekistan noted that “Meat, fish, dairy and eggs contribute to a nutritious and balanced food package and the production provides for livelihoods of millions. Yet, to keep the sector sustainable in the face of climate change and a growing demand for animal protein, there is an urgent need to use resources more efficiently, to reduce emissions of green house gasses and other pollutants, to tackle anti-microbial resistance, to reverse pasture degradation, to become more conscious of animal welfare, and to ensure a fair income for producers".

The Forum was attended by more than 100 participants and over 10 international organizations. National and international experts presented the outcomes of their studies and practical experiences in the search of a more environmentally sustainable in Uzbekistan. The Forum was an excellent opportunity for fostering debate and cooperation in the livestock sector and to highlight its role to ensure food security while addresing environmental challenges.

The event is organised in the framework of the Project “Inclusive and Climate-Smart Investment Financing in the Livestock Sector in the Republic of Uzbekistan” (2021-2026), funded by the European Union and implemented by the French Development Agency (The Agence Française de Développement).
