IX European Film Festival in Uzbekistan – bridges of friendship between the cultures of peoples!

The IX European Film Festival in Uzbekistan, a highlight of 2024, celebrated the 30th anniversary of cooperation between the European Union and Uzbekistan. The festival commenced on November 27 with a grand opening ceremony and press conference at the Palace of National Cinema Art. Distinguished speakers included EU Ambassador Toivo Klaar, Cinematography Agency Director Shukhrat Rizaev, and FOCUS School of Cinema and Theater Head Maria Musakova. 

The festival opened with the Ukrainian film “Luxembourg, Luxembourg” by Antonio Lukic. The film received the award for best director at the 20th International Festival in Monte Carlo and won in the Best Film nomination at the PriGlobal International Feature Film Week, which was held under the auspices of the Pristina International PriFest Film Festival. The IX European Film Festival in Uzbekistan showcased 11 internationally acclaimed films across Tashkent, Fergana, and Nukus. Over 3,000 attendees enjoyed 16 screenings spanning diverse genres. 

Special screenings paired with Cinema Discussion Clubs were hosted at the National University of Uzbekistan, Fergana Polytechnic Institute, and Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan, supported by the EU’s Erasmus+ programme. 

The festival also featured the Summer EU-FOCUS FILM CAMP 2024 for 30 teenagers, culminating in an open three-day documentary film masterclass led by Polish director and professor Maciej J. Drygas in Tashkent. The event attracted over 200 participants – cinema lovers.  

This vibrant event underscored the importance of cultural dialogue, introducing new dimensions of European cinema to Uzbek audiences and fostering mutual understanding.
