HM Queen Elizabeth II: 1926-2022
The EU Council and Commission Presidents as well as the EU High Representative paid homage to HM Queen Elizabeth II and her remarkable achievements on the sad day of her passing.
European Council President Charles Michel stated in a letter to King Charles III that:
“For us in the European Union, her reign covered almost the full arc of post-war European integration. We will always remember her contribution to reconciliation among our nations after World War II and the Cold War. She had experienced the devastation of World War II and knew the importance of trust and cooperation among our countries.
We will do our part to carry on her legacy. Her special legacy of building bridges and of building trust among nations.”
The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to the Queen’s “courage and devotion in serving her country as source of great strength to many and as an anchor of stability in the hardest times”.
The EU’s High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, praised Her Majesty’s “unique contribution to building peace & reconciliation”.
